EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM 2024
Mi Isla Verde 2024 aims to continue promoting spaces for learning and exchange on environmental issues towards sustainable development at all educational levels in the territory of the Isle of Youth.
With the main objective of promoting love for our natural spaces and the training of young environmental leaders, in this second edition, we present a program where screenings, exchanges, spaces for artistic creation, lectures, and workshops on various environmental topics will take place.
Accompanying the World Environment Day 2024, proposed by the United Nations Environment Programme, land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience will be addressed as central themes. There will be a special emphasis on agroecology, as it is an approach that seeks the sustainability of agricultural and food systems from an ecological, social, and economic perspective.
As a special working plan within the 'My Green Space' Project, specialists, both local and international, will gather to learn about, promote, and propose the design of green spaces (orchards, gardens, etc.) in schools in Nueva Gerona and other communities. We consider these spaces vital for healthy interaction among children and adolescents through contact with nature.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM 2023
The participation of children in the program during the first edition of the Festival was very active. Sessions were organized for exchange with specialists and scientists, where there were comments, interventions, questions, and answers. Teachers of geography, biology, among others, also joined. School directors positively valued the program overall and expressed their interest in continuing to participate in future screenings, as they consider that the program should be expanded, given the motivation it generated in students and their contribution to environmental education and the sustainable development of future generations.
As complementary actions, students from Celia Sánchez Manduley School created the first Isla Verde action group. Visits to different schools were also conducted, along with theater and music workshops, as well as donations of school materials to homes for children without parental care. Additionally, the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Silver Medal was awarded to the "We Are the Ones Around Us" project by the Pioneer Scouts Movement for their achievements in caring for and promoting the natural environment of Isla de la Juventud.
Regarding the exhibition of materials, 5 documentaries, 6 animations, and 8 3D documentaries were presented. The educational program reached over 2 thousand children, with the participation of a total of 10 schools. The children involved ranged in age from 9 to 17 years old, from third grade to twelfth grade.
The conferences also had a high attendance rate, with a 90% participation. A total of 15 conferences were held, with the participation of 11 national experts and 4 international ones. Additionally, there was gender balance among the speakers, with 43% women and 57% men. The topics covered included circular economy, food security, local development, gender, popular education, among others.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
"Isla Verde" is an environmental education program carried out in collaboration with the International Film and Environment Festival of the Caribbean, Isla Verde, with the support and guidance of Escuela Planeta and the International Film and Environment Festival of Mexico, Cinema Planeta.
For children and adolescents, screenings tailored to different age groups are conducted, accompanied by Educational Guides that enable teachers to develop activities in class. The objective is to propose solutions to socio-environmental problems at the local, national, and regional levels. This educational tool allows students to reflect and take action towards the care or improvement of their environment.
During the week of the Film and Environment Festival, primary, secondary, and pre-university schools in Nueva Gerona (Isla de la Juventud) are invited to attend the cinema and participate in this educational event on environmental topics, accompanied by workshops, music, and various artistic activities.
These guides and activities also incorporate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations (UN).
